Teaching & Learning Case Study:

4 Directions of Engagement in the Digital Age

Teachings of the Medicine Wheel

Online education is a promising model for enabling access to quality education, but it can be difficult to achieve the same level of engagement that is found in traditional classroom settings, especially to incorporate practices of decolonized teaching that make us unique in the tribal college community.

This workshop will provide you with 4 strategies to elevate student engagement modeled around the teachings of the Medicine Wheel. The strategies will allow you to build an online course that is both accessible and engaging for your adult learners and centered on Indigenous culture. I will also show you how to integrate software into your online course to enhance engagement and student interaction.

As a tribal college instructor for 10 years, teaching in-person, Hybrid, and HyFlex modalities, I have developed a deep understanding of how students learn through different modes of interaction and have worked closely with instructors like yourself to help them create engaging online classes. I understand the importance of feeling a deep cultural connection with your students and will teach you how to maintain that same level of connection in an online environment.
